In the Worst of Times Too

I came across this photo while backing up my laptop files. I don't remember ever seeing it before. It must have been taken when we were preparing a shot (that I do remember taking) with our photographer. It captured us in a moment together when we didn't know anyone was looking, and I love it.

It feels like my husband has been gone more than he's been home in the last six months, but it was more like a 50/50 split. Thankfully, his scheduled travel is done for the time being.

We've been having some "future" talk lately which exciting. After mentally approaching certain life matters with "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it," it feels surreal to know that the bridge is not too far off in the distance now. Things are starting to piece together and things seem... possible now. All of this got me thinking about relationships, love, and marriage. If you ask a married person "How did you know she was the one for you?" or "Why do you want to spend the rest of your life with him?" you will hear something romantic and sweet and positive. That's what you would expect, right? Marriage is a wonderful, happy thing! But life can be difficult.

A few years ago, a friend told me about her cousin who died and how her aunt and uncle's marriage didn't survive it. Losing a child is a heavy blow, and I sympathize for those who have to struggle through it. We loosely put our own marriages in that scenario, and she asked me,

"Do you think you guys would make it through?"

Without hesitation, I answered, "Yeah, I think we would. That's one of the reasons I married him."

One of the main reasons I have faith in this marriage is that I would choose to be with him in the worst of times. Crazy things happen in life, and it is in those times that I am reminded that my husband is not in my life just to be romantic and fun. He is my partner and my teammate. When we got married, we committed to doing life with each other, come hell or high water. The details are beside the point here, but I can say that we have been through a lot. Even so, harder things may be down our long road together, and I'm glad I'll have him by my side. I am not saying that I am an expert on marriage. What I am trying to say is this:

To all the people in relationships who have complete faith in it and have already come out on the other side of tough times: Treasure that!

To all the single people: Choose someone who is fun and wonderful but is also the person you would choose to experience life's toughest stuff with, because if you make it through the tough stuff, you can keep having your wonderful life together.

To my husband: I love you around the universe and back. I love doing life with you in the best of times, and I have complete faith in us in the worst of times too. Thank you.

I love everything you said. The second paragraph really has me wondering. Also, I never saw this photo in your wedding album, so this picture was a private, romantic moment. So sweet!

Perfectly said. (Slow, steady handclaps) I've always tried to articulate exactly what it is that makes this man special. I think you've nailed it. I'd want to be with him for all of the fruit salad that we call life. Even the cantaloupes.

Oh hello, Love said...

So glad you shared this. I feel like sometimes I sound really unromantic when I talk about my marriage. But it is so true. You want someone who is a good teammate, someone you can count on and that you work well with when times get hard because they will. Thanks for being honest and for sharing. I think more people need to hear this!
